We made It! Penong to Ceduna - 76kms

Well, we got what we asked for. Tail wind!!
It's affect was hardly discernable to begin with.
We said farewell to Penong as daylight broke.
It's a lovely little settlement, towards the end of the Nullarbor, with an excellent caravan park, a well stocked general store (which also serves takeaway food and barista coffee) and a pub.
We took a few last minute photos as we left town.
From Penong, the Nullarbor landscape quickly morphed into hectares of stock pasture (we saw another large flock of sheep) and wheat fields, fringed at the roadside by what little bush remained.

The tail wind increased as the morning developed and allowed us to maintain good speed.
The highway was in great condition and a wide, well sealed shoulder provided an escape route when road trains demanded all the road.

By the time we approached Ceduna, the tail wind had become a strong side wind and we were fighting to stay on the road.
2kms before the town, we went through the border quarantine checkpoint. All fruits and vegetables have to be declared. We made sure that all our fruit had been eaten and  passed through the checkpoint quickly.

Luckily I had booked a room at our motel the night before.
We settled ourselves in quickly, then headed for town to buy stores.

Feeling quite tired but very satisfied that we've completed our cycle of the Nullarbor Plain for the SECOND time - and cycled 1924kms since Perth.

We'll take a real break in Ceduna - four nights!
This will give us time to get hair cuts, do our washing and, more importantly, to get Del's broken spokes repaired on Monday/Tuesday.

Just hoping that cycling on a 'sick' wheel hasn't done too much damage to it!

  2. Never doubted you! Well done. A good break is called for I’m thinking, most importantly for getting the bike serviced, and yourselves sorted. I agree that Penong looks good and a nicely presented store. The country side looks more friendly too. Ceduna has a beach as well - a dip in the Oggin perhaps? Enjoy…
