What Road Trains? Bush Camp to Southern Cross - 47kms

It was cold and misty as we pulled out of our bush camp and hit the road at 7.30am!

It's dark by 6.00pm, so when bush camping we eat by 4.30pm, do our bedtime routines and we're tucked up in our sleeping bags by the time night falls.
It makes for a long night though, so strong bladder control is a bonus!

The road trains roared past most of the night  as expected. You'd swear the tent was right in their path, but once tiredness took over, both of us, in our warm cocoons, were oblivious to their sound.

The highway, straight and relatively flat (by NZ standards, anyway) should have been a breeze to cycle today. Del was handling it well, but I began to develop seat pressure which increased the further we went. Del stopped frequently for "comfort stops" for me.

The above was seen at a rest area. Could it be our first snake sighting?
No! Any self respecting snake would be in hibernation at these temperatures.
It's one of the dozens of pieces of rubbish jettisoned from broken down vehicles and ending up on the cycle lane! Nuts, bolts, bungees, straps, shredded tyres you name it -  we've dodged it!

Eventually we arrived in Southern Cross only to find that the motel we'd chosen had no vacancies! All available rooms had been booked by workers.
We eventually found a room at the local caravan park. Hallelujah!

We've decided to stay for a couple of days to prepare and plan for the next, more challenging phase of the trip - several consecutive camp outs and long daily rides.

  1. Another stretch of Australia conquered, yay! It must be frustrating with the unexpected accommodation closures and unavailability...you both rock in dealing with the weather, road trains and tent-life. xx J&J
