The Head Wind Wins! Caiguna to Bush Camp - 40kms
By 6.30am it was light and we were on our way to Cocklebiddy Roadhouse, 65kms away.
We'd hoped that the easterly wind, a head wind for us, would have subsided by now. It had been prevalent ever since we'd arrived at Caiguna.
Today it was as strong - if not stronger- than ever!
After 7 hours we had only covered 40kms - cycling, walking, resting - averaging 7 kms an hour. At that rate, if we could keep up the effort, we would arrive at Cocklebiddy at nightfall, with no guarantee that a room was available.
By 2.00pm we were both exhausted and decided to bush camp.
Actual bushes are few and far between in this area of the Nullarbor.
We eventually found a spot that offered some protection from the wind, though we're still expecting a wild night with the tent flapping!
Wish us luck!
Below are a few photos of the wildflowers growing around the tent. Didn't stop for photos today. Too busy trying to make some progress in the wind!
How anything grows in this dry, red soil beats me!!
Cat’s Ear. Maybe. The bottom photo, that is, it’s possible that or a close relative is growing in our lawn. Quite invasive, and as you say, how do the plants survive? Brightens the camp site though. Pity about the wind but will find out more about the delightfully named Cocklebiddy tomorrow. Wind-free trucking…
ReplyDeleteGood call on the bush camp...you must be exhausted battling that head wind. Thinking of you both. Happy Father's Day dad xx J&J
